TECH TOUR

Senior Living Innovation Summit partners with TACC for immersive tech experience

Where should we store vaccines in the event of an epidemic? What is the likelihood of a hurricane forming? Computer experts provide the tools to answer these complex challenges, advancing science and society. At the Senior Living Innovation Summit, we’ll explore how technology helps solve some of the toughest challenges facing senior living, advancing the industry. That’s why we’ll be touring TACC, the Texas Advanced Computing Center, which designs and operates some of the most powerful computing resources in the world.

We’ll visit TACC’s Vislab, which showcases the technologies that support researchers as they turn their simulations into visually appealing, scientifically significant images. It’s a state-of-the-art facility that explores the intersection between human perception and large-scale visual analysis. In an era of rapidly accelerating AI, this tour provides a hands-on experience for understanding the technology’s capabilities.

Did a trip to Texas really happen if you didn’t eat BBQ? We’re making this trip really real with Austin’s best, Iron Works BBQ. Started in 1978, this Austin staple is housed in a former ornamental ironwork shop, which is a registered historical site. We’ll hear the building’s history from the owner of Iron Works BBQ as we enjoy the rich flavors the restaurant has to offer. In its heyday, the ironwork company created pieces for Jack Benny, Bob Hope, and Lucille Ball. Previous visitors to the restaurant include Bob Dylan and Leonardo DiCaprio.

George is CEO of SafelyYou and on leave from the computer science Ph.D. program at UC Berkeley. He works on computer vision methods to predict and facilitate care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive impairments, which started in 2014 as his Ph.D. research and became the company SafelyYou in 2016. SafelyYou has shown an average of 40% fewer falls and 80% fewer ER visits from falls in dementia care for participating assisted living and skilled nursing communities through a better understanding of unwitnessed falls for individuals that often cannot advocate for themselves.

Uniting Operators & Capital Partners: Embracing innovation, justifying investment, and the future of care delivery 

This session explores the evolution of operators’ and capital partners’ focus on innovation, how they balance long-term versus short-term investment gains, and what they look for in the right technology partner. You’ll hear how innovation has successfully moved the industry forward and what the future of care delivery looks like—with technology playing a critical role. You’ll also come to understand the risk of waiting to adopt new solutions, including the cost of inaction.

Brandon Ribar is the president and CEO of Sonida Senior Living, one of the nation’s largest senior living providers. He’s also a member of the company’s board of directors. Prior to becoming CEO in September 2022, Brandon served as the company’s chief operating officer. In that role, he was instrumental in planning and implementing improvements to the company’s operating model as well as navigating its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was also heavily involved in portfolio divestitures, a recapitalization transaction, and debt refinancing. Prior to joining Sonida Senior Living in 2019, he served as senior vice president of operations at Golden Living, where he oversaw 305 skilled nursing and assisted living centers with 20,000 employees across 21 states. Before that, he was vice president of health care investments at Fillmore Capital Partners, a real estate private equity firm with more than $5 billion in assets under management. Brandon received his bachelor’s degree in operations management information systems from Santa Clara University.

Manisha Bathija has 24 years of experience in the real estate industry. She is a co-founder of Doyenne Healthcare Capital. Manisha leads the company’s acquisition efforts, including sourcing and originating investment opportunities, underwriting and due diligence, and transaction structuring, negotiation, and execution. She also leads the company’s disposition efforts. Prior to co-founding Doyenne Healthcare Capital, Manisha served as Senior Investment Officer for Ventas, Inc., an S&P 500 company and real estate investment trust that owns a diversified portfolio of senior living communities, life science, research & innovation properties, medical office & outpatient facilities, hospitals, and other healthcare real estate in the US, Canada and the United Kingdom. Manisha holds an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Virginia Tech.

Michele Hughes joined Columbia Pacific Advisors in 2017 as an Asset Manager. Ms. Hughes is responsible for performance monitoring of Senior Housing Assets across the country. Prior to joining Columbia Pacific Advisors, Ms. Hughes held numerous clinical and administrative positions at Emeritus Senior Living and Brookdale Senior Living. During her 14 years with Emeritus, she advanced from an Executive Director to the Northeast Divisional Vice President of Operations. Ms. Hughes successfully transitioned her 72 communities as well as the largest number of Emeritus Regional and Divisional staff to Brookdale Senior Living in 2014. She joined Brookdale at that time as a Regional Vice President of Operations. She’s also held various elected positions at the state and national level, including two terms as chair of the New Jersey Assisted Living Center Board and two terms as a member at large on the board of the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL).

She was also an angel investor at Hyde Park Angels. Andy held sales and marketing leadership positions at two other venture backed start-ups that went public (SFSF and PPOD) and has been an angel investor in, and go-to-market advisor for, over 20 tech start-ups. His combined portfolio has gone on to raise $2.5B and has a total market capitalization of $15.2B. Anorak is currently investing out of its second $25M fund.
Previously, Greg founded and was the co-CEO of the UK retail chain Pure before moving into technology as a marketing executive at Scaleform (acq. 2011), Autodesk (NASDAQ: ADSK), and Glassdoor (acq. 2018). During that time Greg honed his ability to distill complex technical concepts into clear, impactful messaging. He uses this skill and his influential network of founders, executives, and investors to add value to his portfolio companies. Greg has a degree in International Business and Marketing from the University of Maryland and is a dedicated husband and father.

Dr. Jason Hazel started his career with FOX in 2011 as a physical therapist and Senior Regional Director of South Carolina. He was a member of the New Territory Development Team involved with regional startups in Maryland and Virginia. In December 2015, Jason was named VP of Operations for South Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia. Due to his passion for senior living, he stepped into a role as VP of Senior Living Partnerships in July of 2016, and in 2018, moved into the role of Chief Development Officer, responsible for sales and growth initiatives for the practice. Jason earned a BS in Psychology from the College of Charleston. He received his master’s degree in Rehab Sciences PT from the Medical University of South Carolina and his Transitional DPT from Temple University. Before joining FOX, Jason served on the Spinal Cord Injury team at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Erez was also the co-founder of Mapsense, a geospatial mapping startup that was acquired by Apple.
